Virginia "Gin" S. Burton (84), of Goodland, Indiana passed away on Wednesday, November 4th, 2026. She was born on April 2, 1942 in Rensselaer, Indiana to Leo and Irene (Davidson) Miiller.
Gin was the daughter of a livestock dealer and homemaker and the second-born of three children. She learned what it meant to be a homemaker herself at a young age, after losing her mother at only eight years old. Growing up with her dad and two brothers, fostered her rugged independence and tenacious spirit. She sought how to cook, sew, and keep house from her Grandpa Carl Davidson's neighbors, Maxine Hotler and Pearl Edmonds. She cherished those relationships and was adamant to give back to her mentors by caring for them in their later years.
Gin attended Goodland High School, where she met the love of her life, a farmer from Goodland. After a short courtship, she married Howard K. Burton on January 24th, 1959 at Saints Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Goodland. Gin took great pride in being a farmer's wife. Gin & Howard's family grew quickly, and by the age of twenty-one she had given birth to five children. She & Howard were in their mid-twenties, when tragedy struck, and Howard's sister and brother-in-law, Gene & Fay Wing, passed away. Soon after, Gene & Fay's four children came to live with Howard & Gin, until each of them graduated high school. If Gin wasn't helping with planting or harvest, you could find her gardening, assisting her daughter Cindy at Rosie's Cafe, mowing, or making meals to take to the field.
Her ten grandchildren were the light of her life. During the summertime she cared for her grandchildren while their parents went to work. Warm summer days were spent playing kickball in the backyard, going swimming at Gordy & Myra's pool, and learning to drive while playing hide-and-go-seek on her golf cart. Grandma's house was the place to be. Even as a college student, stopping by for a visit meant leaving with a few homecooked freezer meals to take back to the dorm. Gin was also blessed with numerous great grandchildren, all of whom brought a smile to her face every time she held them in her arms.
Gin was a member of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church, the Alter Rosary Society, and the American Legion Auxiliary Unit #280. She was also a bus driver for South Newton School Corp for several years. She will be remembered for her 'can do' attitude and always being there to lend a helping hand.
She is survived by her daughter, Cindy (Jim) Bernier; four sons, Denny (Marci) Burton, Steve (Cindy) Burton, Jim (Mitzi) Burton, and Joe (Melissa) Burton. Also surviving are the Wing children, Tom (Sue) Wing, Rick (LuAnn) Wing, Linda (Dan) Rhoades, and Terry (Theresa) Wing.
She was the proud grandma of Brandon (Charlotte) Burton, Ashley (Zach) Shaw, Troy Burton, Brittany (Nate) Besse, Bryce (Kyndl) Burton, Corinne (Willie) Hoffman, Chad (Jamie) Burton, Samantha (fiancé Cody Lottinville) Burton, Brooklyn (Richard) Rappley, and Sabrina (Bobby) Hanna; eighteen great-grandchildren with two more arriving next year.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, and brothers Gordon (Myra) Miiller and Clifford (Susan) Miiller.
A private Funeral Mass with immediate family will be held for Gin at Saint Joseph's Catholic Church in Kentland on Saturday, November 7th at 11:30 AM CT. Gerts Windler And Keller Shelby and Keller have been entrusted with the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions go to the American Legion Auxiliary Unit #280.
