Thomas “Gus” Matson, 82, passed away on November 26, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family. Born on July 25, 1943, to Oliver and Lenora (Wirtz) Matson, Gus grew up in Fowler, where he attended Sacred Heart Grade School and graduated from Fowler High School in 1962.
On January 22, 1966, Gus married the love of his life, Lynne (Pyle), and together they built a life centered around hard work, family, and faith. They raised three sons—Tom (Barb), Brady (Kathy), and Craig (Stasia)—who were his pride and joy.
Gus served his country as a member of the Army Reserve from 1964 to 1970. A gifted mechanic, he devoted his life to repairing and restoring engines of all kinds. In 1985, he became the owner of Wirtz Repair Shop in Kentland, a place where his skill, honesty, and dedication earned him the trust of generations of customers.
Outside of work, Gus enjoyed a simple, rich life. He loved cheering on the Chicago White Sox, Chicago Bears, and NASCAR, and he treasured time spent golfing with his sons. Some of his fondest memories were made on fishing trips to Wisconsin and on the lanes with the Fowler Bowling League. A lifelong member of Sacred Heart Church in Fowler, his faith remained an anchor throughout his life.
Gus is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Lynne; their three sons; and siblings Red (Sis) and Ralph (Mary). He was preceded in death by siblings Earl (Loretta), Oley, Bob, Rich, and Jane Gick (Steve).
He leaves behind a large and loving family, including grandchildren Morgan (Kevin) Lange, Macey (Landon) Happ, Jake (Quiera), Abby, Nick (Adriana), Andrew, McKenna, and Will Matson; step-grandchildren Jessica Rusk and Bob, Steve, and Dan Davis; and ten great-grandchildren who brought him endless joy.
