Russell "Rusty" Carlson, of West Lafayette, passed away on February 14, 2026, at the Veterans Home in Lafayette, Indiana.

Rusty was born on January 1, 1930, in Donovan, Illinois, to Errett and Ester Carlson, who preceded him.

He was a disabled Navy Veteran who served active duty for 5 years.

Rusty married Marcia (Chapman) Carlson on August 6, 1956. Together, they had two children, Marvin Carlson and Cathy (Jeff) Howell.

Rusty is survived by his wife, daughter, 4 granddaughters, and several great-grandchildren.

Rusty was preceded in death by his son and parents; brothers, Melvin, Haymond, and Dale; and sister, Jackie Wolford.

Rusty loved his country, canoeing, and restoring tractors. He was a 70-year member of the American Legion and a member of the Iron Club of Rensselaer; the St. Joseph Valley Family Canoe Club; the White Water Canoeing Club; and the Methodist Church.

In keeping with Rusty’s wishes, the family asks that flowers be omitted. Memorial contributions may be made in his honor to the Brook United Methodist Church, in support of their Thursday night meals, or to the Rensselaer Iron Club Scholarship Fund.
