Listen to Obituary

Norbert “Norb” Cyr, 79, died peacefully surrounded by family on Friday, April 3rd, 2026. He was born on June 17th, 1946, in Lafayette, Indiana, to the late Fred and Loretta Cyr. Norb lived a beautiful life full of family, faith, farming, and silliness. He passed away after a short journey with a difficult illness. He was preceded in death by his sisters Vivian and Philanise; and his parents Fred and Loretta Cyr.

Norb grew up in Fowler, Indiana, and attended Fowler High School. He also completed an Agricultural Short Course at Purdue University in 1966. Shortly after that, he met his lovely wife, Cindy (Carton), and they married on August 29, 1970. Norb and Cindy built and lived a beautiful life on a dairy-grain farm outside of Fowler, where he grew up.

There is no explaining Norb. He was one of a kind, but we will do our best to share some things about him. Norb was a quiet, intelligent, kind man who always had a smile as well as a joke. He was a man of few words who loved his family and showed his love through his actions rather than words. He especially loved making his grandchildren smile with goofy questions and silly jokes.

Norb had a true love of the land. He spent his life growing and building a farm and business that supported his family. Through his constant hard work and success, he and Cindy were able to build a thriving farm operation that continues to grow and prosper as it is passed on to the next generation.

In addition to passing on his love of the land to his children, he also passed on his love of animals, particularly dogs, as well as all things sugary. There was never a time when there wasn’t at least one dog in the Cyr house. His sweet tooth really was for anything sweet, but he could never pass up chocolate and had a particular fondness for Little Debbies. Anyone who rode with him in the tractor would be familiar with the sight of an empty oatmeal cream pie box.

Later in life, Norb found great enjoyment in traveling, especially memorable trips like Greece, Italy, New Zealand, St. Lucia, and even Israel, to name a few. He also immensely enjoyed warm places to get away from cold Indiana winters. Recently, he and Cindy made some great memories in Florida. We wish you could have seen him practicing riding his e-bike down our road. One other happy way to pass the time during the winter was Purdue basketball games. He wasn’t a huge sports fan, but he really enjoyed Purdue basketball and spent years attending those games.

We would be remiss if we did not mention Norb’s love of a good deal. He loved a sale, even if it was something no one wanted or needed (like 5 pounds of olive loaf)! His frugality meant he was not a big fan of gifts. He preferred practicality. His gift wish list almost always consisted of pocket knives, calculators, or flashlights. He accumulated hundreds of these over the years, yet somehow there was never a working flashlight when one was needed. Speaking of frugality, if Dad knew how much this obituary cost, it would have only been 2 sentences.

He is survived by his wife Cindy; his siblings Edward Cyr, Regina Kohn, Jim (Linda) Cyr, Bernie Cyr; all 5 of his children, D’Lee (Scott #1) Gobel, Lori Cyr, Allyson (Scott #2) Bowlby, Chad (Suzi) Cyr, Andrea (Michael) Archibald; all 7 of his grandchildren, Matt (Miranda) Gobel, Katie (Kyle) Walter, Caleb Gobel, Henry Archibald, Simon Archibald, Stella Cyr, A.J. Cyr; 1 great grandchild, Bennett Gobel; and 2 more arriving soon, Carson Walter and Payton Gobel.

Norb was dearly loved and will be deeply missed more than words can say. For anyone who wants to pay their respects, there will be a Visitation at Sacred Heart Church on Thursday, April 9th, from 3 - 7 PM (ET), with a rosary at 7:30 PM (ET). The funeral mass will be at Sacred Heart Church on Friday, April 10th, at 10:30 AM (ET), followed by burial at the Sacred Heart Cemetery and then a funeral dinner at St. John the Baptist Church in Earl Park.

His faith and his community were very important to him. He cared deeply about giving back to his community and would work quietly behind the scenes to help when someone was in need. For anyone feeling moved to do so, we ask that charitable donations in Norb’s honor be made to either Priority 4 Paws- a service providing shelter medicine services through Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine- or to the Benton County Community Foundation. Please specify that the donation is being made in memory of Norb Cyr. Priority 4 Paws donations can be made online via card.
