Jane Frances Haas was born to Virgil Francis "Bogie" and Agnes Mary (Glotzbach) Haas in November of 1945. She grew up in Raub, Indiana, and attended both Raub High School and A.J. Kent High School, where she had a brief role in the play Aunt Cathy’s Cat.
After high school, she moved to the bustling metropolis of Lafayette, where she held a few different jobs until she joined the Foreign Service. She spent four years in the U.S. embassy in Paris, France, and two more years in the embassy in Ouagadougou (in a country now called Burkina Faso). Jane lived in Spain for several years, where she met and married John Pilkington. Jane and John returned to the States when her mother got sick so that they could help take care of her mother and the farm.
After her mother died, Jane took up weaving and other textile crafts and opened her own business: Hoosier Handweaving. Jane sold many of her creations at local craft fairs.
She was involved with the York Township Library and the Raub Alumni group.
She and John kept chickens, pigeons, sheep, rabbits, and even a couple of alpacas. After John’s passing in 2004, Jane stayed and took care of the farm until her death.
She was predeceased by her husband, John Pilkington; and her sister, Rose Ellen (Haas) Vanderwall. She is survived by her brother, Virgil Mark; and Rose’s children, Kenneth Vanderwall, Denise (Vanderwall) Nava, Jennifer (Vanderwall) Cruse, and Joel Vanderwall.
The family plans to have a celebration of life event in the fall.
