Alice Margaret Silver

February 16, 1932 — June 11, 2023

Fowler

Alice Margaret Silver went to her heavenly home on Sunday, June 11, 2023. She was a faithful woman who loved her faith, the Lord, her family, church, and community. Alice was born on the rural Kentland family farm February 16, 1932. She attended St. Joseph Catholic School for eight years, then graduated from A. J. Kent High School in 1950.

Alice spoke often of family and friends who helped take care of herself and eight siblings after her mother passed away when she was two years old. Meddie, her father, never remarried and was a devoted man who raised his children to love God, their church, and family. Alice helped her father and family on the family farm with the livestock, gardening, and field work. Activities that Alice valued and enjoyed while growing up was being a member of Rural Youth in Newton County and being a ten year 4-H member. Alice worked at the Variety Store for three years, then worked at three Sisters in Lafayette. While in Rural Youth, Alice met her husband, Bill Silver from Warren County.

Alice and Bill were married February 4, 1956 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Kentland, Indiana. They shared 63 years of marriage together. Alice and Bill settled in Boswell, then moved to Warren County a couple of years later where they made a loving home and became involved in their community. Alice and Bill were blessed with five children. The living children are Martin (Vicki) of Denver, Colorado; Meddie (Candy) of Lafayette, Indiana; Mike (Karen) of West Lafayette, Indiana; Margaret (Richard Brown) of Fredonia, Wisconsin; and Gerald (Eva) of Williamsport, Indiana. Alice and Bill’s greatest joy were their 18 Grandchildren and twenty-one Great-Grandchildren. Living relatives are Bob and Becky Silver, Pat Sego (husband Tom, deceased), Don Senesac (Rita Silver, deceased), Sandy (Silver) and Jerry Swason.

Alice was predeceased by her loving husband, Bill, grandson, Simon Silver, parents, Meddie and Romana Sego, sisters, Mary Katherine Anstett and her husband Harold, Theresa Sego, Lorraine Sego, Romana Sego, Jeanette Voglund and her husband Vernon, Martha Gretencord and her husband Bill, brother, Tom Sego, and Monsignor Arthur A. Sego, Joyce (Silver) and Dale Wetli, Mary (Silver) and Orval Klemme, Jim Silver, Tom and Joyce Silver, and Patricia (Silver) Portman.

After Alice and Bill’s five children were in school, Alice worked as a Reading Aid at Warren Central Elementary School. Alice also spent time as a 4-H Leader for the Jordan Willing Workers 4-H Club, served on the 4-H Council, and gave her time on the Fair Board. 4-H was important to Alice as a youth, supporting her children in the program, and continuing that support by attending her grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s 4-H events. Alice and Bill could be found on the sidelines of many a soccer games, in the stands at basketball games and band concerts, in the crowd watching granddaughters in the 4-H Queen Pageants, attending theater productions, 4-H livestock shows, participating in military pinnings, graduations, weddings, baptisms, and many other life events that their children and grandchildren participated in. Alice and Bill enjoyed attending the Purdue girls basketball games for many years. Alice and Bill were foster parents in Warren County for a number of years. Sharing their home and family activities with children who needed a safe haven, was very important to them.

After retiring from the family farm and moving to Fowler, Indiana, Alice became involved in Sacred Heart Catholic School as a “reading grandma”, offering class competitions for cutting labels, making homemade noodles for the annual bazaar, baking many cakes for the cake walk and bake sales, and being in charge of funeral dinners for many years. Alice’s chocolate cakes were famous with her neighbors, the newspaper delivery person, and others as she baked each one with love and appreciation for the many things others did for her.

We would like to thank the thoughtful, kind, and supportive staff at Franciscan Hospital, Franciscan Hospice Care, and Westminster Village Health Center. We could not have asked for a more caring, respectful, spiritual, and supportive group of health personnel who took our mom and our family into their hearts. The Benton County EMS department deserves much thanks and appreciation for their prompt response, their respect and kindness to our family, and their dedication to helping their community.

A servant's selfless heart was her trademark. Instead of thinking about what she could do for someone, she just did it. Alice (Mom) will be greatly missed by the many who have been touched by her loving and generous spirit.
